Our added value

Our Vetiver supply chain is part of Givaudan’s Sourcing4Good, a programme to take actions for transparency across supply chains and for a responsible sourcing that protects people and the environment.

Since 2012, Givaudan has been working in Haiti to secure the supply of vetiver root and support the island’s producer communities. Givaudan is collaborating with a local partner who operates with a cooperative of vetiver root producers from three villages in the Les Cayes region.

Since 2014, the Givaudan Foundation has been supporting the cooperative of more than 300 vetiver farmers in the improvement of community livelihoods.

Leveraging the expertise of the perfumers, scientists and crafting facilities of Givaudan House of Naturals, we developed a refined version of Vetiver, revisiting its natural fragrant molecules to create a modern and elegant interpretation of a perfumery classic.

In this modern interpretation, the velvety, textured scent of vetiver root is wrapped in a refined woody warmth. Vetiver Oil Haiti SIGNature vibrates from top to trail with crystalline mineral facets, sparkling with bitter and fruity grapefruit undertones and fleeting nutty notes that reveal upon evaporation. The long-lasting dry-down is dressed with the roundness and sophistication of a balanced vetiver oil.

Vetiveria zizanioides is a grass that hides its delicate scent in its fine, fibrous roots. Anchored deep in the ground, vetiver develops a dense network of slender, hairy roots that are ready for harvest after 12 months of growth.

At harvest time, from January to July, the leaves are cut, the clumps of roots pulled out with a pickaxe and the bare slips replanted for the next harvest. The roots removed from the soil are tied into bales, washed and dried in the shade before being distilled.

Distillation of vetiver roots takes about ten hours. The volatile compounds are passed through the condenser and collected as essential oil in the decanter. Finally, the oil is centrifuged to remove water droplets.
