The origin of the Damask rose is still enshrouded in mystery, with speculation that it is from Asia Minor or the Middle East. It takes its name from the city of Damascus, the capital of Syria. Today, three countries are best known for cultivating this rose and producing its essential oil or absolute: Turkey, Bulgaria, and Morocco.
The Damask rose was introduced into Bulgaria in the 17th century. Since then it has thrived in the center of the country, in the valley of Kazanlak, known as «Rose Valley», recognized around the world. The rose has become so important in this country that it has been designated as a national emblem.
Like many flowers, roses are fragile and are harvested at dawn. The early hours of the morning provide much-needed humidity for picking the justopening roses. The harvesting period lasts about 20 days.
