The plant in depth

Cananga is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia. It also grows on the islands of the Pacific and the Indian Ocean, as well as in Australia. Cananga is prized for its delicately scented yellow flowers that bloom in drooping clusters. Cananga prefers sheltered, shaded areas in tropical and subtropical climates with thoroughly moist, loose soil. Its Latin name, Cananga odorata forma macrophylla, shows that it shares botanical genus and species with ylang-ylang and it is for this reason that the two trees have long been mistaken for one another. The height of the tree can make harvesting dangerous, as it can reach several dozen meters. One must climb a ladder, then the tree, holding a long stick, to loosen the flowers, which fall to the ground to then be gathered. The canaga blossoms are then steam-distilled to obtain the essential oil. In perfumery, cananga essential oil has long been viewed as a less-expensive alternative to the very pricy ylang-ylang essence. Today, cananga essential oil has been deemed as having its own olfactory qualities. It has a strong floral character and jasmine and woody facets.

In Indonesia, cananga is mainly found on the island of Java, which has a monopoly on distillation of the flowers. As cananga and ylang-ylang were long regarded as being one and the same plant, it is still not uncommon today for cananga to be called ylang-ylang and vice versa. Cananga essential oil also has homeopathic properties. It can be used externally to regulate blood pressure but also to combat frigidity. On some Pacific islands, like Tonga or Samoa, Cananga wood is used in the making of canoes. To a lesser degree, it is sometimes used to craft furniture.
